Summer School in Information Retrieval

INTRODUCTION

The Summer School in Information Retrieval is organised by the Special Interest Group in Information Retrieval (GLIR) of the Italian Computer Society (AICA). This school was held from the 10th through the 13th July 1989 at the Department of Electronics and Informatics (DEI), University of Padova, Via G. Gradenigo, 6/a, Padova, Italy.

The School has been conceived and designed by Nick Belkin and Maristella Agosti for an Italian Audience. The School is intended for researchers starting out in Information Retrieval and for industrialists who wish to know more about this increasingly important topic.

The School was received by the audience as an important and successful event, because of that during the closing up it was decided to organise a new Summer School in 1990, this time for an European audience.

This Summer School benefited substantially from the support of the University of Padova and from the Department of Electronics and Informatics of the same university. Without their liberal help, the Summer School would not have been possible.

Many thanks go to all lecturers for having accepted to take part in this event that has been the seed and the originator of the European Summer School in Information Retrieval.

Maristella Agosti
Chairman of AICA/GLIR and Organizer of the Summer School
