ESSIR started in 1990 from the successful experience of the Summer School in Information Retrieval (SSIR) that took place on July 1989 in Padua and was addressed to an Italian audience. SSIR was conceived and designed by Nick Belkin, Rutgers University, U.S.A., and Maristella Agosti, University of Padua, Italy, and organised by the Special Interest Group in Information Retrieval (GLIR) of the Italian Computer Society (AICA). It was held at the Department of Electronics and Informatics (DEI), University of Padua.
The temporal gap between every edition has been reduced to keep up the time with the web development until it gained a biennial temporal gap since 2003.
The school lived and continue thanks to its economical forces and to industrial founds.
One of ESSIR sponsoring and supporting organisation has been EIRSG-CEPIS, the European Information Retrieval Specialist Group under CEPIS (Confederation of European Professional Informatics Societies) which has provided a number of scholarship to help young students and researchers to attend ESSIR.
